In the book, Drive, Daniel Pink proposes that intrinsic motivation is the most powerful driver of human behavior, with purpose, mastery and autonomy as the primary intrinsic motivators.
- Purpose: The feeling of contributing to something larger.
- Mastery: The desire to improve skills.
- Autonomy: The freedom to direct one’s own work.
What happens when you have a deep sense of purpose and an insatiable desire to hone your skills but remove the freedom to operate in a self-directed manner???
There is an opportunity here for leaders. What can you do to give greater autonomy to your teammates?
“This is the threat to our lives that we all face today. Is the system going to flatten you out and deny you your humanity, or are you going to be able to make use of the system to the attainment of human purposes? How do you relate to the system so that you are not compulsively serving it?”
― Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth
